Early in his career, Daniil Trifonov was hailed for his astonishing technical brilliance. Today, he has transformed from a prodigious virtuoso into a unique and versatile artist. His latest recital programme beautifully reflects this journey: Timeless Chopin waltzes set the stage, drawing us into the magical realms of Tchaikovsky’s ballets, brilliantly transcribed for piano by Mikhail Pletnev. The programme culminates in Alberto Ginastera’s Second Sonata, a profound work composed near the end of his life in Geneva in 1983. It resonates with the “fragrant sounds” of his Argentinian homeland, a wellspring of deep inspiration. This is music filled with yearning: Chopin’s grief for a lost Poland, Tchaikovsky’s nostalgia for childhood innocence, and Ginastera’s vivid evocation of Latin America’s landscapes and soul.
