Performing Beethoven’s last three piano sonatas in a single evening is akin to attempting to reach the summit of the world – an immense challenge that demands both physical endurance and mental fortitude. The Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, a rising star on the international stage, brings the boundless energy and inspiration needed to tackle these monumental works. In all three sonatas, Beethoven constantly breaks free from the confines of traditional sonata form, instead following his own “inner voice”. This is typical of his late works, which, though infused with a sense of solitude, are also powerfully expressive and visionary.
